Within the UChurch community, we often refer to ourselves as a “family”.  This is because scripture describes the church as the family of God, using terms such as ‘brother’ and ‘sister’, spiritual ‘father’ and ‘mother’.  This concept is unconventional for many; people tend to think of a church being associated with buildings or programs, rather than the people that comprise it.  However, two things are true for any gathering: the people represented, and the purpose for which they gather.  If either the people or the purpose were removed, there would be no gathering at all.  That said, if we are going to speak authentically about the church, it must be done in relation to people involved, and the purpose for which they gather.
