It’s not about perfect behavior. It’s about passionate hearts. This series – a continuation of the seminar held in February – will speak to this truth.

It’s hard enough to train kids to behave, but good behavior isn’t what Jesus calls for in the Bible. God wants hearts and souls that are shaped in vibrant faith and love toward Himself and others. In Spiritual Parenting, Michelle Anthony calls us parents to depend upon God for our children’s spiritual and moral development, urging us toward a heart posture of surrender and faithfulness. The end goal is vibrant faith that is passed on from one generation to another.

Parents are, by the power of God’s Spirit, to depend on God in order to create home environments that God can use to beckon our kids to Him. Isn’t it time to embrace this simple but revolutionary concept?

Church, this month we have an incredible opportunity to hear from and ‘engage’ with (haha, pardon the pun) our good friend, Rice Broocks. As part of his Engage2020 initiative, he is going to make several stops in Alberta to share about the gift of evangelism, and how this gift can be activated in churches around the world, and most specifically, in North America.

“ENGAGE2020 was developed by Dr. Rice Broocks as a strategy to equip and empower local Churches for growth through evangelism. It has been designed to particularly address the critical state of the North American Church where only 3% of Churches are growing through evangelism.

Engage Weekend - 6 hours of training with an experienced, Church-based Evangelist. In these on-site sessions, the core of the Church will be stirred to evangelize and make disciples; proven tools such as TheGodTest will be introduced to clarify and simplify this task; those with the gift of the Evangelist will be identified.

This strategy is named ENGAGE2020 because of the unprecedented opportunity to reactivate the missional DNA in the Church for what has been called the ‘Decade of Evangelism’.” (source: http://ricebroocks.myshopify.com/pages/frontpage)

S.A.L.T. Training from Rice Broocks on Vimeo.

If you’re an evangelist or if you would like to learn more about how God’s church can grow through the activation of evangelism, please join us on:

Date: Saturday, April 21

Time: 12:15 – 4:15pm

Location: The Church of Immanuel (1512 – 1st Street SW)

Church, we’ve got an incredible opportunity to hear from – and dialogue with – Dr. Brian Miller, an expert on the intersection of science, faith and culture. “Science, faith and culture intersect?” you ask?
Join us as Dr. Miller unpacks the happy coexistence of science and faith, and the new breakthroughs in science that support the reality of intelligent design (by an intelligent Designer!). And feel free to invite family and friends to this session; it will truly be an opportunity for both first-time encounters with the living God, and for fresh revelations of His creativity and purpose. Keep reading for details:

What? Open session with Dr. Brian Miller on The Intersection of Science, Faith and Culture

Here’s an exciting opportunity, courtesy of our friends at Hopethiopia!

“Hopethiopia is having a great year and God is blessing our paths. We are involved in many initiatives and projects in both Ethiopia and Rwanda.

Many people ask about ways that they can help, so we have created a unique opportunity for everyone to participate. On September 24th, 2011 we will be hosting the first ever “Run of Hope”. This will be a fundraiser event to help us raise awareness and funds to help with projects in Ethiopia and Rwanda. With some of the proceeds, we will build 2 orphan homes in Ethiopia in November 2011.

Our goal will be to have at least 100 participants each committed to raise $1,000.00 each. The event will be a 1, 2, 5, or 10km walk, run, or skate. It will be a lot of fun, a great way to promote a healthy lifestyle, and show that you care. We encourage all to participate no matter what age or level of fitness; kids are welcome to join in with their parents! The funds will go to a great cause and you will truly be making a massive difference in the lives of orphans that are in great need.” ~ Ralph, Hopethiopia co-founder

To register for the ‘Run of Hope’, send an email to Ralph and he will provide you with additional event details, as well as a pledge form to get started with fundraising!

UChurch in Calgary, AB is hosting the second annual Canadian Harvest Institute from August 28th to September 2nd, 2011 and YOU’RE invited!!

What is Harvest Institute?

Harvest Institute is five days of Christian ministry training in five modules: devotional life, evangelism, apologetics, leadership, and practical ministry skills. It is taught by seasoned ministers who together bring the complete “five fold” ministry giftings for the equipping of the saints (Eph. 4:11-12). The Institute includes daily, prolonged prayer and worship, small group practicums, and lunch with the speakers, as well as local outreach times and ministry planning times during the week. The entire experience is best described by a past participant: “Harvest Institute is revival with instruction.”

Who should attend Harvest Institute?

Students, young adults, young professionals…any young person who has a passion to influence their peers, campus, workplace, city and nation for Christ!

What will I learn during this week?

Harvest Institute modules include:

evangelism – Understand the central story of the world, God’s good news of Jesus Christ, and learn to communicate the gospel simply, relevantly, and powerfully.

apologetics – Gain priceless insight into the post-modern mind of this generation, as well as biblical wisdom to handle the questions and challenges with which believers are confronted on the campus today.

leadership – Learn the foundations of Christian leadership and how to be an influence in your sphere on your campus.

practical skills – Be equipped with the necessary skills of effective ministry, such as leading successful small groups, making disciples, administering the baptism of the Holy Spirit and counselling.

devotion – Be inspired in life’s highest pursuit and take home practical training to excel in the spiritual disciplines of scripture study, prayer, and fasting.

Additional components of the institute include a local group outreach, daily immersion in the Campus House of Prayer, twice-daily small group time, extended worship sets, elective classes, and a time of prophetic presbytery.

What can I expect from day to day?

Sunday, August 28th:

9:00am group hike in Canmore

6:00pm connection BBQ. This BBQ is both a fun, and a crucial element of Harvest Institute. It is an opportunity to form relationships and build trust with those you will be spending the week with. So whether you are coming from Calgary, or from out-of-town, please plan to come in time for the BBQ! (location details to follow)

Monday, August 29th – Friday, September 2nd

845am – 9:00pm training and equipping. (a more detailed schedule of the week will be emailed to you after you’ve registered)

What does it cost?

Early registration = $60.00 (available until June 30, 2011)

Standard registration = $80.00 (available from July 1 – August 28, 2011)

Ok UChurch, this is going to be FUN! Sure we may have teams leaving for Thailand, Ethiopia, Philippines, Nashville…but what about the missions field that exists all around us?! Well, on Sunday June 12, we’re going to go love them too!

The plan is to work together with the Victory Foundation to serve the community of Ogden, right here in Calgary. We will be co-leading a church service with Victory’s team, and then hosting a community BBQ in their parking lot. So don’t think for one moment that this Sunday will be a ‘day off’…we need you to come and be the church! There will be lots of opportunities for you to help out, from cooking to playing games with kids to sharing with Ogden community members who come to participate in the festivities. It’ll be a real missions trip, and without the long, uncomfortable plane ride!

*please note: care for babies, toddlers, and kiddos will not be provided, so please plan accordingly*

Here are the deets you need to know:

Date: Sunday, June 12

Time: 10:30am – 2:00pm (10:30am church service; 12:30pm BBQ)

Location: Victory Foundation - 7012 Ogden Road Southeast (be sure to use the ‘Get Directions’ function on Google Maps as this is a tricky location to find…)

This two-week course, offered by our good friends, Ellel Ministries, is “designed to take healing out of the realm of the passive Christian believer and bring healing into the realm of the diligent disciple. Healing is far too often thought of as something that is done to us rather than an active engagement by the one being ministered to in order to remove the barriers to healing. You will be taught how to effectively deal with these barriers which is important for effective and lasting healing. The training will be issue focused and will provide you with ministry keys to various conditions that we have learned about in 25 years of pioneering ministry experience. There will be a mixture of teaching to establish biblical foundations for the healing ministry, demonstration ministry and practical hands-on experience that is issue focused.” (http://www.ellelministries.org/canada/events/restoring-the-healing-ministry)

UChurch, this is an exciting opportunity for you to partner with; we are producing our first worship CD!

For ongoing worship CD updates, click here!

For more than 10 years, Leland Nelson has served as our worship leader at UChurch. His songs, his spirit, and his passion for God have inspired many to follow Jesus and abandon themselves to Him in worship. This year, Leland has written more than 30 unique songs, all of them God-breathed.

Concerning his music Leland believes, “But my life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus – the work of telling others the Good News about God’s wonderful kindness and love.” ~ Acts 20:24

Leland, along with his wife, Heather, have a desire to record these songs and produce a worship album that might bless not only our UChurch community, but many others around the world. As their church family, this is our opportunity to become part of Leland and Heather’s God-given dream, and to support them in the journey of creating a worship album. The goals of this album project are:

To glorify God. The songs on the album are for God’s people – everywhere – to worship and glorify Him;

To raise funds through the sale of the album for ongoing missions and evangelistic outreach work on campus, in our city, in our country, and “to the ends of the earth”;

To provide an inspirational and equipping tool for outreach that presents the gospel and our love for Jesus in words and music.

To commemorate the work that God has done in and through our UChurch community over the past year. The songs God has given reflect our life together as a community and may be seen as stones that, together, become an altar commemorating all that God has done.

In order to make this dream a reality, partnership in terms of both prayers and finances are needed. To be added to the Worship Album Prayer Updates list, email worship@uchurch.ca. And to donate to the album project and contribute to the $34,000 goal, visit http://www.canadahelps.org/GivingPages/GivingPage.aspx?gpID=10279 (select “Worship CD” in the funds designation box).

Guys, a cool opportunity is coming our way! From February 24 – February 27, members of the Christian Legal Fellowship (CLF) will be coming from across the nation for a conference in Calgary…and while they are here, they want to hang out with us!

CLF is a national association of Christian legal professionals, law students and interested friends who recognize the responsibility of integrating Christian faith and law. Since 1978, CLF has built a steadily stronger voice for justice and religious freedom through an equipped, unified and mobilized membership. If you are a law/pre-law student or are interested in law, you can feel free to register & join them for the whole conference. Contact Janice at janice.j.wong@hotmail.com for more info.

In addition to joining us for our Sunday morning celebration, CLF members are looking for places to stay while they are in town. If you have a spare bed, couch, or space on your floor, and are willing to billet a CLF member from Feb. 24 – 27, let us know by filling out the form below. Please note that participants will need to travel to and from the UofC each day for their conference, so it would be ideal for you to live near public transportation, or are willing to drive them.

Beginning this Fall, our good friends, Ellel Ministries, will be offering their widely-acclaimed Prayer Ministry Skills School, and you’re invited to join in! The course runs over 6 weekends – one weekend per month beginning in October. See below for more details:

The Need… Effective Prayer

Our human spirits are often damaged, resulting in pain and woundedness.

The damage has a source—a root cause—yet our prayers may only address the symptoms; which does not bring about healing or freedom into one’s life.

As the body of Christ, we need to be equipped in how to pray and minister more effectively into people’s lives so that Jesus can bring about complete healing, restoration and wholeness.

The Tool… Prayer Ministry Skills

This Prayer Ministry Skills series is designed to provide many of the spiritual keys and basic skills necessary to effectively pray for someone in need.

The teaching follows a logical order and is broken into six weekend courses.

During the series there will be teaching on key relevant subjects, question and answer sessions, demonstration ministry and opportunities to practically apply that which is learnt. It is designed to disciple and equip the Body of Christ.

As we are now preparing for the fall and getting ready to welcome our university students back from summer vacation, UChurch is in need of volunteers for the following positions:

1. Hospitality: greeting and ushering can be a very effective way of allowing people a pleasant experience at UChurch. Guests often say that it was a friendly face and genuine words of encouragement that kept them coming back and helped lead them to Jesus. UChurch currently needs six volunteers for the hospitality team. The time commitment involves about four hours every third Sunday with duties that include:
• Greeting people and ushering them to their seats
• Picking up & returning the coffee; ensuring it is set up outside the church auditorium before the service begins
• Distributing offering envelopes & connection cards
• Conducting a head count
• Tidying up the auditorium before and after the church service
• Being alert to security issues that may arise
• Loving people authentically the way Jesus does
Contact Harry at hospitality@uchurch.ca if you are interested.

2. Podcast/Web: have you ever wondered how Sunday morning messages get from ‘live on Sunday’ to the UChurch website to your iPod playlist? If you are curious, then this is the opportunity for you! UChurch needs two volunteers to assist with the recording, editing, and posting of Sunday morning messages onto our website. The time commitment simply involves being present at Sunday morning celebrations and about 15 minutes after the service, as well as one hour during the week. No expertise is required; contact Erick at web@uchurch.ca if you are interested.

3. Kids Church: Kids Church is a fun, exciting, and adventurous place in which we are privileged to serve kids from grades 2 – 6. If you are passionate about loving God and have a desire to love on kids, then Kids Church is the place for you! UChurch is currently in need of six volunteers to assist with Kids Church. Contact Cameron and Kristina at kids@uchurch.ca for more information.

4. Multimedia: the Multimedia Team provides visual support for Sunday morning celebrations, as well as for other gatherings throughout the year. So if creativity is your thing, and you are equipped with some basic computer skills, this opportunity may be for you! UChurch needs three volunteers to join the Multimedia Team, with the time commitment being from 9:30 – 12:30 on Sunday mornings. Contact Elton at multimedia@uchurch.ca if you are interested!

5. Nursery: Nursery is a loving environment in which we bring God’s love and practical care to babies aged 0 – 2.5yrs. We care for the littlest members of God’s family by teaching them through bible stories, spending time playing games, and praising the Lord with kid’s worship music. UChurch currently needs five volunteers to serve in the nursery. The time commitment would be one Sunday per month during the regular Sunday morning celebration (10:30 – 12:30). If you are interested, please contact Jenn at nursery@uchurch.ca.

6. Youth: the UChurch youth group has grown and developed greatly in the last several years, and is now actively involved in missions trips, participation in conferences, and serving within the community. The youth leadership team exists to serve youth from grades 7 to 12, helping them grow closer to God and encouraging them to positively impact their schools. UChurch currently needs two volunteers who are interested in serving as youth leaders. For more information, please contact youth@uchurch.ca.
